Natural Skincare FAQs
1. Can I use Oil of Emu on my face?
Absolutely! Apply a small amount and massage into your face. Many people find that they get fantastic results using oil this way. It’s great for dry skin, sunburn or any skin damage, or if you want to give your face an extra helping hand softening your skin and eliminating fine lines.
2. What is the shelf life of Emu Spirit’s products?
Due to our rendering process, our Oil of Emu products have a shelf life of 3 years. Make sure you keep your products out of direct sunlight.
General Questions about Emu Oil
1. Are all the parts of the Emu used?
Yes. Although we use the oil, there are other companies that sell the meat, leather and feathers from the Emu so that nothing is wasted.
2. Can I use emu oil on my scalp/hair?
Absolutely. Emu oil is really great to use if you have a dry scalp, psoriasis on the scalp or want to improve the condition of your hair. Perhaps the best way to use the oil is to wet your hair, pour the desired amount of oil into our palm and work it into your scalp through to the ends of your hair. You can then leave it over night (try wrapping your hair in cling wrap) or leave it in for 20-30 minutes. Use shampoo afterwards to make sure you clean any left over oil.
3. Do you add anything to your oil?
Our pure Emu oil is exactly that – pure. We don’t mix it with water, we don’t add any lotions or oils and there are no additives.
When we make our other products such as the Arthritic and Muscular Rub or the Day Crème, we take our pure oil and add that to the blend, so you are always receiving the best quality Emu oil in all of our products. For more information see our ‘Why Emu Spirit’ section or our Natural Therapies and Natural Skincare sections.
4. Does Emu oil make you can weight?
No. Unlike other animal fats, Emu oil is a non-saturated fat and contains 78% essential omega fatty acids. The amount most people use in a day is 5ml or less, which is quite a small amount in our overall daily dietary needs.
5. Is your Emu oil cold pressed?
No. Because Emu oil is derived from an animal and not a fruit or vegetable, it cannot be cold pressed the way that oils such as olive oil are. Emu oil needs to go through a rendering process.
6. So does that mean your oil is ‘Triple refined’ or ‘Super refined’?
Emu Spirit uses a unique patented rendering system called OILTEK™. We do not believe you should ‘Triple refine’ or ‘Super refine’ Emu oil at all! The reason for this is that when Emu oil goes through those particular processes, it loses its activeness and unique structure. For more information about our rendering process and the problems with marketing ideas such as ‘Triple refined’ and ‘Super refined’ please see our ‘Why Emu Spirit’ section on this website.
7. Why does my oil look white and feel thick, instead of a golden liquid oil?
This is a normal reaction emu oil has with weather. You’ll find that when the weather is a little colder, or if you’ve kept your oil in the fridge, the oil will solidify and will be harder to get out of the bottle (this can happen to the capsules too – they look cloudy when its cold). Alternatively, when the weather is warm, the oil will come out easily and have a nice golden colour to it (or clear, depending on the light!). If your oil is white and thick don’t panic – it’s still safe to use and hasn’t gone ‘rancid’. All you need to do is rest your bottle of oil in a warm bowl of water for about 5 minutes, shake well and use as normal.
